Hi, i’m marcus.  i’ll be your host.

Here you’ll find a collection of odds and ends: news, views, interviews, and the products of various other muses.  i fancy myself to be something of a wannabe polymath, so chances are you’ll find a bit of everything here: things related to my studies in psychology, linguistics, computer science, and theology, to the outdoors, to IT, to the Bible and Christianity, to photography, astronomy, music, and anything else that takes my fancy.

Also here are my Songs of Ascent, poems and songs i’ve written over the years to celebrate and try to understand life.  Why “songs of ascent”? Well, that is the name by which fifteen of the Psalms (120 to 134) are known. These songs are believed to have been sung by the Jewish pilgrims on their way up to Jerusalem.

In the same way i find myself also on pilgrimage through life, looking forward to the new Jerusalem. The journey is not always easy or pleasant, but, as G.K. Chesterton said, “one sees great things from the valley, only small things from the peak.”

The Chronicles are (supposedly) annual glances at the years gone “bye”, published here for the benefit of all whom i’m arrogant enough to think are interested to know what i’ve been up to…

Why do i write?  Well, what i learn of the world around me fascinates me, and i write to try to understand what i see and to share that knowledge with others.  But ultimately there’s a greater understanding and a more certain and enduring knowledge than can be gained simply by watching the world, and helping people to find that is my heart’s greatest desire.  This is expressed best in the words of the apostle Paul in the Bible:

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

(Colossians 2vv2-3, NIV)
